Kansas, Foreigner, and STYX…

The Miller Mortorsports Park was the scene. The sky was bright blue between the rather large clouds… light breezes made the Stars and Stripes wave beautifully at the huge crowd. The venue was general admission so there was a sea of blankets, scattered chairs, and an abundance of coolers… (Mr. Loo??)

We found our spot on  the “Tommy Side” of the stage and staked our claim. Then we waited. And roasted. And waited some more…

When the show finally began, Kansas took the stage and did a great job of winning over the half-hearted crowd. Most of their songs were vintage Kansas. Great vocals and the electric violin is always fun, especially live, but judging from the audience, it wouldn’t have mattered how they played. We feel they truly still have the chops and definitely earned their spot on the stage with their tour mates.

After a brief set-up break, Foreigner played admirably. For their encore they brought out the Tooele High School Choir to add their voices to an exciting rendition of “I wanna know (What Love Is)”.  As part of a VH1 fund-raising program, in each city Foreigner plays this summer, local high schools will be invited to perform with the band and will be given $1000 to support the arts programs in their individual schools. The kids did a great job!

Finally, after hours of impatient waiting, Styx was on! They, as always, did not disappoint. Their sound and set list were worth the wait–we were even given a surprise performance of “High Enough”. It was amazing! At the end of the show, as the last notes of “Renegade”  sounded, the fireworks began in the eastern night sky. What a show!

In our opinion, the venue left a lot to be desired. There was very little authority presence. The rule of the day seemed to be ‘No Rules’. The parking was a joke not to mention getting out of the parking lot at the end of the show. The crowd was unruly at best… and we’re not talking the “fun, I’m at a concert” unruly. They were, for the most part, just rude. People were throwing/leaving trash everywhere. Despite the NO SMOKING signs and laws, there was smoke all around. There was way too much bumpin’ and grindin’–for a crowd that size, and mixed ages at that, folks were way too uninhibited. We realize everyone goes to concerts to have a good time, but if you are going to be that bold–get a room.

Hopefully our next chance to see Tommy and the boys will be a little less uncomfortable. And, it will take one heck of a show to get us back out to the Motorsports Park again…

The Jon Dansie Band, an inspiration in giving…

• May 7th, 2010

The Jon Dansie Band is a great example of giving back to the community.  Jon was referred to me as a great guitar teacher for my Son, who has been taking guitar lessons from him for about a year and a half  now.  Since meeting Jon, I’ve come to discover the passion that he and Floyd Kuntz have for giving back to the community.

Here are a few ways that I know of in which they have given back:

Last August, I asked Jon if his band would be willing to perform at the KidsFest Carnival at Wheeler Farm, helping to raise money for The Christmas Box International, and they jumped right on board.  Despite the rain from time to time, we had a fantastic day and raised a lot of money for abused and neglected children.

Last September, I had the pleasure and watching the band once again, as they were at The Hogle Zoo for the StepOut Walk to Fight Diabetes, raising money for the American Diabetes Association, and earlier that day they had performed at Sugar House Park for the Hydrocephalus Association’s Walk.

Most recently, Starchild Music Productions in conjunction with the Jon Dansie Band was a sponsor for “Hugs For Life”– an organization dedicated to Suicide Prevention and Awareness.  See full story here:

I think it’s important to support those who work so hard to give back to their community, if you feel the same way, check out their website to see how you can help support the Jon Dansie Band and Starchild Music Productions:

Thank you Lana for your kind words… It’s angels like you who keep our spirits high! We are grateful we are able, in some small way, to give back to a community of friends who have always supported us. In this world full of hate, greed, mistrust, and just plain ugliness we are ever hopeful and looking to the stars for inspiration and ways to share.

Inspiration…

Sometimes we all need a little inspiration. Today I am getting mine from one of my favorite song writers; Tommy Shaw of Styx. In 1998 Tommy took a break from the huge stage and did a little solo album that became one of his greatest works.

7 Deadly Zens is an import album distributed by Phantom Import Distribution. If you can get your hands on a copy, I highly recommend that you do! You can also download it, but this one is worth holding in your hands.

Inspiration (Mona Lisa) is a great track and one that runs through my head often.  I hope you find your inspiration as well…

- Inspiration -

 You say anything is possible

I say I believe what you believe

If you say it, I’d say it is true

I dream and in my dreams I think of you

So real, it’s like the way I turn to you

When I awake

I wanna see you there all the time

 ’Cause I need your inspiration

I need your guiding light

This is my invitation

Come on and be my world tonight

 There’s a place

Where everything is beautiful

Love rules and everything is do-able

But that world seems such a vision away

I give up everything I ever had

Walk away, leave this crazy life behind

If I knew that you’d be the one by my side

 I need your inspiration

I need your guiding light

This is my invitation

Come on and be my world tonight

And I would run through the gauntlet

I would scream in the Vatican

I would laugh my resignation

I would dance naked in the sand under moonlight

Every brick and every stone and shingle laid

Every dream and every little plan we make

We’ll build a world more beautiful

Than anyone has ever made

 I need your inspiration

I need your guiding light

This is my invitation

Come on and be my world tonight

We are very pleased and grateful for this nomination. THANKS to everyone for coming to the Studios and sharing your love of music, not only with us but, with your friends and families as well. We have grown a lot this first year in our current studios. We couldn’t have done it without YOU!

The nomination for Best of State is something we take very seriously. We know that if you were not happy with our services this nomination could not have happened.

We pledge to continue doing everything we can to meet your needs and exceed expectations as a full service teaching studio, gear shop, and repair facility.

Best of State Nomination for My Guitar Teacher Jon Dansie’s Starchild Music Productions by eran on March 30, 2010

I think a lot of my readers thought I was bragging about how great my guitar teacher was in my post about How to Find a Guitar Teacher. Well its all true… Jon Dansie’s Starchild Music Productions was nominated for Utah’s Best of State Award.

When I was at Sundance, we won a Best In State Award. It is the gold standard of Utah’s Business. Jon, Brandon and Floyd should be extremely proud. I know they have worked tremendously hard. These guys do what they do because they love it not because it makes money. I envy anyone who can do what they love and make it successful. Great Job Guys!!!

And one more thing…

Jon and Co. do more charity work than any business I know.  Here is one of their latest giving projects. Starchild Donates Guitar for Hugs For Life

2009…

Can you believe the year is almost over?!  Thanks to everyone for your support and suggestions as we have grown over the last year. We are proud of the things we have accomplished this year and anticipate that 2010 will be even better!
During this last year we became the #1 Blues Band in Utah and had some of our favorite songs make it onto iTunes. We added some new members to our line-up; Michael Gustafson on drums and Ben Jamin on rhythm guitar. We are continuing with writing and recording at our favorite studios, Annex Recording. Jon and Floyd opened a “Brick and Mortar” storefront in Union Square in Sandy, UT to encourage others to learn to play guitar and expand their love for music and all things guitar.
We also enjoyed supporting some of our favorite charities as well as some new causes that are now near and dear to our hearts. We want to thank everyone involved with The American Diabetes Association, The Utah Board of Realtors and The Christmas Box House, and the Hydrocephalus Association. Being able to lend our name and talent to such worthy causes is wonderful!  We love being able to help.
